Voglia launches new impact calculator – understand the impact of your choices
The new tool encourages the choice of long-lasting clothing and encourages environmentally conscious consumer behavior.
Voglia launches a new impact calculator that helps consumers understand the environmental impact of their choices. The goal is to make sustainability information available to everyone in an easy-to-understand and customer-oriented format. The calculator measures the carbon footprint of selected products and the price of the product in relation to its lifespan.
“We want to encourage thoughtful purchasing decisions. Responsibly produced clothing is more affordable than fast fashion – with the help of the calculator we can illustrate the distribution of the price over the life cycle of a long-lasting product, while reducing the product's carbon footprint,” says Kristiina Virtanen, Quality Director at Voglia.
The product's lifespan has a significant and direct impact on emissions
The production of clothing always creates a carbon footprint, even if the product is produced ethically and responsibly. The most significant act of responsibility is to extend the life of the garment. However, by using the garment for a long time, maintaining it, repairing it and ultimately recycling it, the carbon footprint of the product can be reduced. In the future, the goal is to return the garment to circulation, i.e. to eventually turn the garment into new material or recycled fiber to make new clothing.
With the calculator, Voglia wants to illustrate in concrete terms how important it is to extend the lifespan and how this affects the environmental footprint of a product. On a global level, up to 45% of emissions could be saved by doubling the lifespan of textiles. The brand believes that extending the lifespan of a product is a step towards a more responsible future and high quality is the basis for this effort.
Counter development
The development of the impact calculator began in spring 2022 as part of the LAB University of Applied Sciences' Digital & Sustainable Fashion Showroom project. The aim was to develop digital solutions for the clothing industry. The project was funded as part of the European Union's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kuuki designed and facilitated the project's Design Sprint workshops. Kuuki implemented a working prototype and the final impact calculator.
The calculator's carbon footprint calculation is based on emission estimates from each product's country of manufacture and logistics, as well as information that is currently traceable at Scope 1, 2 and 3 levels. The calculator meets the requirements set by the international Greenhouse Gas Protocol, a standard for calculating the carbon footprint of organizations.
The product age determination is based on the brand's own calculations over a 40-year period. This knowledge base ensures a reliable assessment of retail claims that go beyond the general criteria defined by consumer protection.
Vision of the future
The impact calculator is just the first step towards an even more transparent and responsible clothing industry. Currently, impact calculations are available for Voglia's five most popular products, and the aim is to expand the calculations to different products in the future.
With the counter, the brand invites everyone to weigh the impact of their choices and promote responsible consumption.
