Material library
All the materials we use are carefully selected. The key goals of our product development and production are to find and use materials that are easy to maintain. We strive to make products that do not need to be washed too often and that, if properly cared for, will remain beautiful and usable for a long time.
We prefer natural and recycled materials in Voglia's production. Unfortunately, not all of our materials are ecological yet, but our goal is to systematically increase their share in our selection. Currently, our collection includes the materials listed below.
LENZING™ ECOVERO™
Lenzing™ Ecovero™ is a more environmentally friendly viscose developed by the Austrian company Lenzing, whose production uses up to 50% less carbon dioxide emissions and water than regular viscose. Lenzing™ Ecovero™ is made from only FSC or PEFC-certified wood from sustainably managed forests located close to the production sites.
TENCEL™ LYOCELL
Tencel™ Lyocell is a modified cellulose fiber produced by the Austrian company Lenzing. The cellulose used as the raw material for the material comes from FSC or PEFC certified and responsibly managed forests. Tencel™ Lyocell fiber is produced in an energy-efficient closed loop, where 99% of the solvents and water used in spinning are recovered for reuse. The end product has properties similar to viscose, but its production process is more environmentally friendly and does not contain the harmful carbon disulfide used in the production of viscose.
RECYCLED POLYESTER
Recycled polyester is made from used plastic. Its production uses, for example, recycled bottles, industrial cutting waste, used polyester clothing and plastic waste collected from the oceans. Voglia's recycled polyester is made from PET bottles. PET stands for a type of plastic called polyethylene terephthalate. The chemical recycling of polyester does not reduce the quality of the synthetic fiber, but the material produced is as good as new. Virgin, or so-called regular, polyester is made from petroleum, which is a non-renewable natural resource. Using recycled polyester reduces the consumption of our limited natural resources, as no new raw material is needed. Producing recycled polyester also requires less water and chemicals than regular polyester.
FLAX
Flax is a strong and durable fiber that produces about 50% less emissions than cotton. It also uses significantly less water and pesticides in its cultivation. The share of flax in Voglia's material selection has grown significantly in recent years.
COTTON
Cotton is one of the main raw materials in our collection. It is breathable, feels soft on the skin and comfortable to wear. Cotton is a durable material that is easy to care for. As a natural fiber, it is also biodegradable.
Our selection includes several different cotton grades.
Organic cotton is produced while respecting and maintaining biodiversity and soil fertility. It is grown without harmful artificial fertilizers or pesticides, making it a safe choice for both people and the environment. So-called conventional cotton uses a lot of harmful chemicals that are dangerous for both people working in the cotton fields and users of the end products. In addition, chemicals pollute the surrounding nature and waterways. However, in terms of water use, organic cotton production is no different from conventional cotton; both require the same amount of water to grow. The organic cotton used by Voglia is GOTS and Ökö-Tex 100 certified.
GOTS, or Global Organic Textile Standard, is the leading textile processing standard for organic fibers. It includes ecological and social criteria and independent certification for the entire textile production chain. The standard defines internationally recognized requirements that ensure the organic status of textiles from the harvest of raw materials to the consumer of the final product.
Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is an international certificate that indicates the user safety of a product. A product that complies with the standard has a skin-friendly pH level, is tested to be free of harmful substances, and has non-toxic dyes.
Organic & Mercerized is a range of responsibly mercerized cotton knitwear from Portuguese brand RDD Textiles. Mercerization is a finishing process for cellulose fibers and fabrics that creates a silky feel and a beautiful sheen. Mercerization reduces shrinkage, improves dyeing properties and strength. All RDD processes are certified by Control Union. Almost 100% of the chemicals used in production are recycled, and the water heated in the manufacturing process is reused in the dyeing stage.
Recycled cotton is part of our products made from R-TWO™ fabrics. These textile grades from the ISKO™ brand, part of the Turkish SANKO Group, are durable blended fabrics that combine recycled cotton and polyester.
“Recycled cotton is a yarn industry Content Claim standardized waste material. In the production of cotton yarn, waste is inevitably generated; it is collected and utilized in the production of R-TWO™ fabrics. The proportion of recycled cotton in R-TWO™ fabrics varies from five to 20 percent. Our recycled polyester is also certified. The Recycled Claim Standard guarantees a 5–20% recycled polyester content in our products,” says ISKO™. Read more at iskodenim.com. (The quote has been freely translated into Finnish.)
REFIBRA™
Refibra™ is a recycling technology developed by the Austrian company Lenzing, which uses cutting waste from the clothing industry as a raw material. The fiber itself is produced in the same way as Tencel™ Lyocell. Voglia uses Finnish-woven Remium knitwear in its collection, which contains 38% Refibra fiber. In addition to cutting waste, other raw materials are utilized in the material to achieve a sustainable and high-quality end result. Refibra brings softness, shine and drape to the knit blend.
CELLULOSE TRIACETATE
Cellulose triacetate is a semi-synthetic modified fiber made from wood pulp. The triacetate grade we use is manufactured by Mitsubishi, a Japanese company whose closed loop method enables the recycling of solvents in the production process and minimizes the amount of chemicals needed and waste. Cellulose triacetate is pleasantly smooth, drapes beautifully and lasts a long time. The material does not wrinkle or pill easily, making it easy to maintain and comfortable to use.
SILK
Silk is a natural fiber obtained from the cocoons of the silkworm. It is lightweight, durable, antibacterial, and biodegradable. Silk feels pleasant on the skin and comfortable to wear. It is suitable for all seasons, warming in the cold and cooling in the heat. The process of making silk fabrics requires only a small amount of water, energy, and chemicals. With careful maintenance, silk products will remain beautiful for a long time, even for decades.
VILLA
Wool is a versatile and durable animal fiber. It is recyclable, and chemical-free wool grades are also biodegradable. Wool is used and loved primarily for its warming properties, but as a breathable material it is also suitable for mild temperatures. Wool retains its warmth even when wet, for example when it rains.
We carefully select the quality of our wool and regularly monitor the reliability of our material suppliers. Our collection includes several different types of wool.
Merino wool comes from merino sheep. It is soft and warm without being itchy, which is why it is also suitable as a base layer. Merino wool is antibacterial and breathable - it is easy to keep fresh by airing. When washing is only needed infrequently, the material remains beautifully functional for a long time, and the product's carbon footprint is also reduced. We use mulesing-free merino wool, the origin of which includes countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, New Zealand, Australia, the United States and South Africa. (We strive to add accurate origin information to each of our products' online store pages.)
Mohair is the wool of the Angora goat. It is long and has a high sheen, which makes mohair knitwear soft and fluffy. Mohair wool is breathable and warm. It is easy to keep clean by airing and requires only infrequent washing. The mohair we use is mulesing-free and comes from South Africa.
OTHER PARTS RELATED TO THE RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION OF MATERIALS
CHEMICALS
Voglia and its fabric suppliers are committed to complying with the REACH Regulation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals). It is a European Union directive on the use of hazardous chemicals, with restrictions and controls. Ensuring health and environmental protection and promoting the development of alternative methods are the main objectives of the regulation.
Some of our materials are also Öko-Tex product safety standardized, which guarantees that the final product does not contain chemicals classified as harmful substances above the permitted limits.
Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is an international certificate that indicates the user safety of a product. A product that complies with the standard has a skin-friendly pH level, is tested to be free of harmful substances, and has non-toxic dyes.
MICROPLASTICS
For now, we use polyester in some of our products due to its functional properties related to quality and durability. Although some of our polyester is recycled, we are aware of its responsible problematic. Polyester releases microplastics into the environment, especially during washing.
We recommend that all clothes made of synthetic materials, regardless of brand, be washed in a laundry bag, which is intended to prevent microplastics from being carried into our environment with water. Such bags are made by, for example, Guppyfriend.
